In the above photo, the ornamental tree is simply in the way, creating an obstruction in front of the home’s entrance. We wanted to make this home as beautiful at night as during the day, nestled in a wooded setting. Now, you can see at least four trees surrounding the home, contrasted with the color and texture of the brick.

Landscape lighting’s brightest appeal is certainly aesthetics. But a lighting design can also increase safety and security around your property. Squint your eyes and see if you can make out this detached garage. The before photo shows just how challenging it might be to navigate the walkway to the home. When the eye is drawn to the sweeping arches, the home’s rectangular windows fade into the background. Without landscape lighting, this home looked somewhat awkward in the dark. But now, it soars to the sky (which is why we also lit up the chimney).

In previous years, it was popular to light up just the first floor of a home. A 2025 landscape lighting trend will be to illuminate all the edges of the home’s front, a sort of reverse-silhouette. Here’s a before photo of a home, showing the edges in shadow.

The eye is most pleased when it can see something in its entirety. And that’s why the lighting portrait of this home helps the viewer feel satisfied.
2025 Landscape Lighting Trends: Softness, Not Contrast
The before photo of this home shows bright lights on the front porch and dark shadows everywhere else. Our challenge was to maintain the brightness near the front door, while making it less glaring and difficult to look at in darkness.
We expanded the lighting portrait by adding wall-wash lights up the prominent “tower.” Illuminating some of the organic landscaping elements softened the picture and gave the eye somewhere to travel other than the porch lighting. Also, it’s much safer to navigate the driveway and sidewalk now.

This homeowner’s home has always been dark after sunset. They wanted to create interesting effects to add distinction to their home’s appearance. In the before photo, all you see are lights from the interior.
We enjoyed starting with a blank slate on this project.
